MOBKE - Un quartet franco-américain au croisement des mondes

MOBKE est un quartet transatlantique au carrefour des influences et des identités musicales. Le projet germe dans l'esprit du contrebassiste français Théo Girard à son retour d’un premier séjour marquant aux États-Unis, où il découvre l’énergie sourde mais intense de la scène new-yorkaise. Profondément inspiré par toutes les époques du jazz américain, Girard souhaite réunir des musicien.nes à la personnalité forte, capables de s’approprier cet héritage tout affirmant unne voix résolument contemporaine.
Autour de lui , trois artistes venu.es d’horizons contrastés : la batteuse américaine d’origine chinoise Lesley Mok, figure montante de l’approche avant-gardiste ; la pianiste française Sophia Domancich, exploratrice sonore aux mille projets ; et le saxophoniste new-yorkais Nick Lyons reconnu pour la finesse de son jeu et son sens de l’improvisation. Ils forment un ensembleà l’énergie brute et sensible, où les compositions de Théo Girard deviennent le point de départ d’une écriture collective, nourrie par l’écoute mutuelle et la liberté de chacun.

Le nom MOBKE reflète les racines géographiques et symboliques de projet : MOntreuil et BrooKlyn, comme deux pôles reliés par un même désir de dialogue. La lettre “E” incarne l’ “ensemble” - dans tous les sens du terme : un groupe, une union, un acte de création partagée. Une musique née de la rencontre, par-delà les distances, les générations et les contextes.

MOBKE - A Franco-American quartet at the crossroads of worlds

MOBKE is a transatlantic quartet at the crossroads of musical influences and identities. The project was born in the mind of French double bassist Théo Girard on his return from his first major stay in the United States, where he discovered the muted but intense energy of the New York scene. Deeply inspired by all eras of American jazz, Girard wanted to bring together musicians with strong personalities, capable of appropriating this heritage while asserting a resolutely contemporary voice.
Around him, three artists from contrasting horizons: Chinese-American drummer Lesley Mok, a rising figure in the avant-garde approach; French pianist Sophia Domancich, a sound explorer with a thousand projects; and New York saxophonist Nick Lyons, renowned for the finesse of his playing and his sense of improvisation. They form an ensemble of raw, sensitive energy, in which Théo Girard's compositions become the starting point for a collective writing process, nourished by mutual listening and the freedom of each individual.

The name MOBKE reflects the project's geographical and symbolic roots: MOntreuil and BrooKlyn, like two poles linked by the same desire for dialogue. The letter “E” stands for “together” - in every sense of the word: a group, a union, an act of shared creation. Music born of encounter, across distances, generations and contexts.
